"Russia Plays Down Progress in Peace Talks, Intensifies Attacks in Eastern Ukraine; Russian forces also struck around Kyiv, while Ukraine said it fought off advances in the eastern Donbas region" - WSJ - SCW Newswatch
The Wall Street Journal reports on Russian military activity in Ukraine, even while Russia reportedly was dismissive of Ukrainian efforts to pursue peace negotiations.
"... [The Putin regime] ... dismissed a diplomatic overture by Ukraine in peace talks, while Russian forces hit targets around Kyiv despite saying they would limit attacks there ... [Russia] also stepped up ground and air assaults in eastern [Ukraine] .... Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said talks Tuesday ... didn’t represent a turning point .... 'No one said that the sides have made headway, ... We can’t point to anything particularly promising.' Less than 24 hours earlier, Moscow’s chief negotiator, Vladimir Medinsky, had described [Ukrainian] proposals ... as a constructive step and held out the prospect of a meeting between ... Putin and ... Zelensky, to seal any deal .... "
Just a day earlier, Medinsky had said that, as a goodwill gesture, Russia would limit military operations near Kyiv and other northern Ukrainian cities, after Russia was repelled by strong Ukrainian resistance. On Wednesday Russia indicated it was regrouping some of its forces for fresh attacks in the Donbas, against which Ukraine reportedly defended, even while fighting continues to be notably fierce around the eastern Ukrainian city of Mariupol.
Meanwhile, despite Peskov's comments, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov voiced continued interest in peace talks.
